This treatment reveals a more youthful appearance by effectively blocking signals from the nerves and relaxing the facial muscles.

Dr. Christopher R. Hove offers a number of injectable fillers at his Paoli, PA plastic surgery practice, including BOTOX Cosmetic. Before undergoing any procedure, it is important to know what to expect. Here, we discuss BOTOX results and expectations of this innovative cosmetic treatment.

What Areas Can Be Treated with BOTOX Cosmetic?

BOTOX Cosmetic is intended for use around the mouth, forehead, outer eyes, and between the eyebrows. Patients with lip lines or chin wrinkles can also benefit from this treatment. It should be noted that wrinkles directly caused by the effects of gravity or sun damage may not respond well to BOTOX Cosmetic.

When Will I Notice Results?

When BOTOX Cosmetic is injected, the substance binds to the nerve before entering the cell. Once this occurs, the muscle becomes relaxed and less prone to overuse. This process takes approximately three days, though it can vary from patient to patient. Therefore, most patients who receive BOTOX notice results in about 72 hours, and enjoy full results of treatment in approximately seven days.

Are There Side Effects following Treatment?

Nearly every cosmetic procedure involves post-treatment consequences. However, because BOTOX Cosmetic is non-invasive, the side effects are much milder when compared to traditional cosmetic surgery.

Most patients experience some degree of discomfort, redness, bleeding, bruising, or swelling immediately following BOTOX treatment. These typically occur right around the injection sites.

In most cases, these side effects will dissipate after a few hours, although some patients may experience bruising and swelling up to one or two weeks.

To address these issues, we recommend applying a cold compress to the injection sites in 20-minute increments for the first 24 hours. This will help soothe discomfort and minimize the effects of bruising and swelling. Applying makeup will also help to conceal any irregularities in the skin.

How Long Do Results Last?

Most patients enjoy the results of BOTOX Cosmetic for up to three or four months after which point injections must be re-administered to maintain the outcome of treatment. As muscle action returns, the lines will gradually reappear.

However, patients who continue to receive BOTOX injections over time may notice that lines and wrinkles appear less prominent. This is because the facial muscles are being trained to relax.

As you grow older, you may notice that BOTOX Cosmetic does not deliver the same results it originally offered. This is simply due to the natural effects of aging. If lines and wrinkles become too prevalent and you are unhappy with the results of your BOTOX treatment, alternative cosmetic procedures can be explored, such as face lifts, brow lifts, or eyelid surgery.
