Men and Cosmetic Procedures
Looking Your Best is for Everyone
There’s a story attributed to classic film icon Cary Grant in which he introduces himself to a woman he’s never met in person. “You don’t look like Cary Grant,” she says. His reply? “Nobody does.”
In the modern world, in which men of all ages are bombarded daily by film, TV and social media images of the masculine ideal, it’s necessary to remind ourselves that those (usually heavily retouched) images of models or handsome celebrities often don’t represent reality, even to the models or actors themselves.
Very few of us will ever be models or film stars (Spielberg keeps ignoring my calls, but fingers crossed!), and to hold ourselves to those physical standards is unrealistic. However, with modern cosmetic procedures it is possible for men to project the best versions of themselves, particularly as the signs of aging become more apparent.
But why won’t men more willingly consider the option of cosmetic procedures to help improve their appearance? Part of it has to do with the male stereotypes in our culture. We’re taught men are supposed to be strong, stoic and unconcerned with the signs of aging. It’s all about “aging gracefully,” we’re told.
Many men also see examples in pop culture of exactly how they don’t want to look. Someone who might be concerned about deepening crow’s feet; droopy, tired eyes or jowls forming under his chin doesn’t want to end up looking feminized or like he’s had extensive work done, resulting in an appearance that, at its best, could be described as artificial. His goal is to look refreshed and renewed – more like he’s been on a relaxing two-week vacation rather than looking like he “had work done.”
Fortunately, at our Paoli Hove Center this “fresher” look is entirely possible without significant surgical intervention. As a board-certified facial plastic surgeon who focuses entirely on facial cosmetic procedures, I understand the significant differences between male and female facial structures and design all procedures to provide the optimum result for all patients.
In many cases, non-invasive options like Botox and cosmetic fillers are all it takes to smooth lines and wrinkles and subtly add natural volume to an aging face. Best of all, these can often be administered over a lunch break: improved and rejuvenated results without the recovery time of surgery.
For more involved procedures – maybe you’ve never been a fan of your nose’s shape or your droopy eyelids or puffy under-eye area making you look older than you feel – a consultation at the Hove Center with will help you understand the options that are available to you.
“I am so pleased with the results of my lip enhancement. Having a beard can diminish the appearance of lips – Dr. Hove did a beautiful job of creating more volume that looks natural. I am thrilled. Dr. Hove has an incredible talent for beautiful, natural results.” Hove Center Patient, 2021
