Coronavirus Update

To Our Patients: Update on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

What a very different world we have just in the past week. We understand how stressful this is- emotionally, medically, and financially. I am reaching out to communicate with you and the rest of our patients to hopefully help guide you as best I can. Through television, radio, internet news, and social media, we are bombarded with information every minute, and it is difficult to know what information is accurate. As a doctor with a background in scientific research, I believe in making decisions based on known or proven facts, not on hunches or conjecture. When it comes to your health, PLEASE consider the source of your information. For instance, you may have heard recently about a particular actor with a large social media following alleging he had a cure for the coronavirus. Or you may have heard that a particularly well-known professional baseball player was consulted on how to handle the pandemic. If I want to be entertained, or want to improve my batting average, I would consult with those people. If I have concerns about what medication to put into my body, or how to improve a worldwide public health crisis, I would prefer consulting with someone who has devoted their life to researching those topics.

That being said, I would encourage using the Center for Disease Control (CDC) website (www.cdc.gov) as your main source for information. It is straightforward, science-based unbiased advice regarding this particular strain of coronavirus, COVID-19

To further assist you, we are adjusting our office policy. We are keeping the office open for your health needs, but we are restricted from scheduling certain surgeries at the Paoli Surgery Center and Main Line Health Hospitals (injuries/fractures, and cancer cases are permitted) to help conserve limited resources, and limit your unnecessary exposure unknowingly to the virus. In our office, we are wearing masks, pre-screening patients, measuring temperatures on everyone (including staff), further spacing appointments, having patients wait in their cars to reduce proximity, and arranging telemedicine (video appointments) when possible. Of course, we continue to disinfect our exam rooms between every patient, much as we always have been doing. We may not be able to immediately answer your phone call, but we will return your calls.

Sorry for such a long message, but I needed to share all of this with you. Please be smart and stay safe!

Cheek Implants vs. Juvederm Injections

A woman's cheekHaving prominent cheekbones can enhance your face in a number of ways. Not everyone is born with statuesque bone structure, unfortunately. That’s where Dr. Christopher Hove can help. His facial plastic surgery center provides the Philadelphia, PA area with the latest surgical and non-surgical treatments for cheek augmentation.

Two of the most common treatments to enhance the cheekbones include facial implants and Juvederm™ injections. Let’s compare these procedures below so you understand your options and which one may be best for you.

About Cheek Implants

Cheek implants are facial implants that are placed atop the cheekbones in order to add prominence and definition to the face. These cheek implants are custom crafted for precise shape in order to achieve optimal results. Different types of materials can be used for cheek implants.

The Cheek Implant Procedure

Cheek implants can be placed through various incisions, though it’s common for them to be placed through incisions inside of the mouth. If a patient is undergoing other facial surgeries such as a lower eyelid surgery or facelift, cheek implants can be placed and positioned through those surgical incisions.

The Pros and Cons of Cheek Implants

The biggest advantages of getting cheek implants are:

  • Customized implants allow for precise sculpting of facial features
  • The implants appear natural under the skin
  • The cosmetic benefits of cheek implants last for decades

The biggest disadvantages of getting cheek implants are:

  • Expensive compared to non-surgical options
  • Downtime after surgery as well as surgical recovery time
  • Risk of infection and other post-op complications

About Juvederm Injections

The Hove Center for Facial Plastic Surgery is proud to offer a host of dermal filler injections to people in the Philadelphia area. Juvederm is one of the most popular fillers on the market. This hyaluronic acid-based filler adds volume to the injection site, plumping up facial features and enhancing overall appearance in the process.

The Juvederm Injection Procedure

Juvederm can be injected directly into the cheekbone area by a plastic surgeon. It will be added carefully and deliberately to ensure a focused enhancement of the cheekbones that appears natural.

The Pros and Cons of Juvederm

The biggest advantages of Juvederm injections are:

  • Non-surgical enhancement of the cheekbones and cheek area
  • Less expensive than undergoing facial plastic surgery
  • The procedure is quick
  • No downtime after treatment
  • Low risk of serious side effects and complications

The biggest disadvantages of Juvederm injections are:

  • The results are only temporary (several months)
  • Repeated Juvederm injections necessary for lasting benefits
  • Dermal filler injections not always as precise as facial implants

Is One Cheek Augmentation Option Better Than the Other?

“Better” is such a relative term here. It really varies from patient to patient depending on their goals. What we can say is that patients who want a permanent cheek augmentation solution should consider cheek implants. Patients who would prefer to avoid surgery should consider Juvederm or other dermal filler injections.

During your consultation at our practice, we can go over your aesthetic goals and the various treatment options available to make sure you get the ideal treatment that is best for you and your needs.
