What Is Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid surgery targets the delicate eye area to tighten and smooth skin for a more alert, youthful appearance and improved peripheral vision.
Concerns Blepharoplasty Can Treat
If you're looking to target the eye area while leaving the rest of your face untouched, blepharoplasty can be an ideal solution. Blepharoplasty can help correct the following concerns:
Sagging SkinBlepharoplasty focuses on tightening up loose skin to give the eyes a more open, awake appearance.
Bags Under the EyesPuffiness and sagging skin under the eyes, otherwise known as "bags," can be removed through surgery.
Puffy EyelidsFatty deposits can create a puffy appearance on the upper eyelid. Your doctor can remove these fatty deposits during your surgery.
Drooping Lower Eyelids
The lower eyelids can droop to reveal the white part of the lower lash line. With blepharoplasty, this skin is tightened.
Sagging skin around the eyes can limit your field of vision. Blepharoplasty may restore your vision range.

How Much Do "New" Eyelids Cost?
The cost of eyelid surgery depends on what type of anesthesia is used.
- Under local anesthesia, the cost of surgery ranges from $1,900-2,500 for either the upper or lower eyelids, while both upper and lower eyelids together are usually $3,400-4,000.
- If you require IV sedation ("twilight") or general anesthesia, Dr. Hove ensures a board-certified anesthesiologist will also tend to your care. This typically increases the fee by another $1,500.
If you need help budgeting for blepharoplasty, you can inquire about financing through CareCredit®. The program helps break the total cost of surgery into affordable monthly payments. Dr. Hove and his team will answer any questions you may have.
The Eyelid Surgery Procedure
Upper Eyelid Surgery
Over time, the upper eyelids become heavy and start drooping, giving the face a tired or even an angry appearance. By strategically removing a safe amount of excess skin and soft tissue from the upper eyelids, Dr. Hove restores a rested appearance while avoiding a "surprised" look. This type of eyelid surgery is a fairly quick procedure with a short recovery.
After numbing the upper eyelid skin, an incision is hidden in the natural crease from the inner to the outer corner of the eyelid. Excess skin and loose soft tissue are removed. Sutures are used to close the incision.
Even as a stand-alone procedure, upper eyelid rejuvenation can provide life-changing results.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
When most people think of problems affecting the lower eyelids, they think about bags under the eyes. This area is complex and this type of eyelid surgery can be performed in different ways. Sometimes the lower eyelid skin just needs to be tightened or resurfaced; sometimes excess fat needs to be removed; sometimes both approaches are required to provide patients with the best results.
During this type of eyelid surgery, incisions can be made on the inside of the eyelid or hidden below the eyelashes. This allows the incision site to remain hidden during recovery. Lower eyelid surgery can be performed under local anesthesia in the right circumstances. In such cases, patients can experience a quick recovery from their eyelid surgery.
Eyelid Surgery Recovery
First Few Days
The first two days after surgery, Dr. Hove aggressively advocates for the use of ice packs to limit swelling and bruising. You may experience dry eyes, but there is usually minimal discomfort, with most of our patients just taking Tylenol by day two. Patients will return to our practice serving the Main Line area for periodic checkups to monitor the progress of recovery.
First Few Weeks
During the first week, your eyes will easily fatigue while reading, using the computer, or watching TV, so frequent breaks are needed. Most swelling settles by the first week, and then sutures can be removed to allow you to apply eyeshadow. This is when most of Dr. Hove's patients feel comfortable going out in public.
In the months that follow, patients will recover from all post-op side effects of blepharoplasty, achieving a more refreshed look. Dr. Hove calls eyelid rejuvenation the cosmetic surgery that yields "the biggest return on your investment." This relatively simple procedure can transform your appearance for years to come.
Many patients combine their blepharoplasty procedure with one or more plastic surgeries to complete their makeover. A few of our complementary plastic surgery procedures are:
Drooping eyelid skin is sometimes caused by weakening forehead muscles. A facelift can lift your features to lend to an overall more youthful appearance.
A brow lift pairs nicely with eyelid plastic surgery since both affect the eye area. As our eyebrows droop, you may be left with an angry expression that doesn't match what you feel inside. A brow lift can help you express how you feel again.
Neck skin is delicate, similar to the skin around your eyelids. It can droop and wrinkle as you age. A neck lift tightens the skin to remove deep wrinkles and jowls to give patients a more smooth and youthful appearance.
